A sad day for meThis weekend saw the end of the summer for me; I admitted defeat and packed away my BBQ. As I visit our clients there’s one topic I can’t fail to have a conversation about. The summer (or lack of) seems to have got everyone talking, headlines like “Wettest Summer since the World Began” and flood warnings in July will secure its place as a memorable summer for all the wrong reasons.I guess the next question to ask is what will winter bring? I know it’s not something we should be thinking about in September but floods, heavy snow and general diabolical weather could affect your business practices. Make sure you have a weather proof disaster plan in place to ensure smooth running of companies IT. If you would like to talk to an engineer about getting your own disaster recovery plan in place, give us a call. |

Nice to meat youThis weekend, a few friends and I headed out to the local gastro-pub for a nice juicy steak and a few pints. Despite the lack of sun, it is still summer after all. Medium rib-eye is my steak of choice finished off with a creamy stilton sauce. You can imagine my disappointment when told steak was off the menu.I ordered the trio of sliders (as close to a steak as I could get) and began thinking about the possibilities using IT to create meat and physically ‘printing’ a steak using a 3D printer. Although not mainstream yet, we already have the technology to print physical plastic and metal items such as toys, cutlery and even car parts but how great would it be to actually print food?! Billionaire investor Peter Thiel has decided to invest in a project to assist with exactly that, a physical juicy vegi-steak that is ‘bio-printed’ using just layers of cells. I know it’s not physical meat but I’d be willing to try it, plus it would make over stocking/under stocking a thing of the past for pubs and restaurants. |

Which galaxy is the greatest?Having grown up with the invention of the internet, I feel I can comment first hand on how impressive the development of technology has been within the last 10 years. Questionably the most impressive piece of technology of the year was released earlier this week. The Samsung Galaxy S3 is undoubtedly the most powerful smart phone available today. It is also the most pre-ordered gadget ever exceeding the iPhone 4s by well over twice the amount. The main appeal to a smart phone for me is receiving email and viewing my calendar whilst out and about. It allows me to keep an eye on things without me needing to be sat at my desk. To many, this now seems like a vital part of their day but others are yet to experience this extremely convenient service. Pyranet don’t just work with computers, we can assist with a whole range of technology including smart phones. Please call us if you would like to discuss this further. |

Sharks can be a real pain....Ben Fogle is no stranger to ridiculous challenges but today he has announced he will be swimming the Atlantic Ocean over 100 days which is the equivalent of swimming the English Channel (a ridiculously difficult thing to do) every single day.Sometimes, work can often feel like you’re swimming with him, with your hands tied behind your back and an anchor attached to your leg. Luckily, if you know how to use it properly, a computer can act as life jacket. At Pyranet, we’re devoted to ensuring all of our clients are comfortable and happy with the use of a computer. We do our best to remove the anchor, cut loose your hands and turn the Atlantic Ocean into a manageable swimming pool. If you need assistance with the use of a PC or help with a particularly irritating problem, please feel free to give us a call. |

Pop your signature on there for me....Email signatures have always been somewhat of a grey area within business. Ideally you want to keep everyone’s in uniform with the rest of the company making things appear professional and recognisable but it’s not always as simple as it sounds.Often, a new member of staff can drive terror into the heart of the person required to setup a new email account for them, a nightmare of unimaginable proportion trying to keep the signature suitable and the same layout as everyone else’s. Wouldn’t it be great if there was a way of managing this centrally with a minimum of fuss? Great news, there is and what’s more, Pyranet are offering it for free to all of our clients who choose the Pro-Active IT Support contract. For more information, give us a call. |

Drought warnings to Flood alerts!Just one question is on my lips this week, "Can I use a hosepipe to wash my car?!"It's hard to believe that many parts of the UK have a hosepipe ban as the rain continues to fall so heavily. Whatever the experts say about 'the ground being too hard' or 'drainage being poor' one things for sure, I can't wait until the sun arrives to clear it all up! The river Stour in Dorset has burst its banks and many local houses and businesses have found themselves dealing with flooded rooms and power failures. Could your business survive a flood? Being certain that your disaster recovery plan is efficient is vital to businesses that value their data. Pyranet can offer you a free IT Support Audit to any business in the East Midlands which includes a detailed report of your disaster recovery efficiency and more importantly, how long it would take to recover from a complete failure. Vital information that your business can't afford to be without. |

Jason Vorhees or something a little deeper? Why is Friday 13th classed as unlucky? Is it purely related to the modern day films or does it have deeper roots? Some say it relates to numerology. 12 is considered a good number, 12 gods of Olympus and so on but 13 is classed as irregular. The last supper could also hold some clues to this superstition as having 13 people eating together is believed to lead to a death of one of the diners.Friday has been seen as unlucky since the 14th century expressed in ‘The Canterbury Tales’ and many professions consider this as a bad day to travel, begin new projects or release new products onto the market. Black Friday has been associated with a stock market crash and other disasters since 1800s. Friday 13th however has only been considered unlucky since the 20th century. The superstition seems to come from a popular novel, ‘Friday, the Thirteenth’ by Thomas W Lawson. There is no evidence to suggest that this date is linked in any way to the Knights Templar as the 2003 novel ‘The Da Vinci Code’ would suggest. |

What’s worse than finding a worm in your apple? This week, Apple has finally experienced their first major issue from a virus attack. Over 550,000 Macs were infected with a virus which forced them to become part of a ‘botnet’. A ‘botnet’ is a group of computers controlled by one external user and can be used for things like hacking bank accounts, bringing down major websites or forcefully downloading malicious software.“Macs have often been branded as ‘immune’ to virus attacks but this is simply not the case”. As Macs begin to grow in popularity, the potential of a virus being written for them also increases. If you are concerned about online threats and would like more advice about protecting against it, please feel free to contact us. |

It’s Snow JokeIt appears that the start of April has seen a battle of the weather (which inevitably the sun will win) but until then, we’ve seen yet another dusting of snow across many parts of the England, Wales and Scotland.Nottingham was no exception. I had a 30 mile round trip up to Chesterfield to deliver some IT support to a few of our clients and found the roads in complete chaos! The motorway was down from 4 lanes to 2, the roads around Chesterfield weren’t safe to drive at the correct speed and the clients I had gone to see were short staffed as 3 of their guys could not get their cars off the drive. So what does this all have to do with IT Support? Well luckily the 3 members of staff were able to work without an issue as if they were in the office using technology Pyranet had set up for them. Could your staff do the same? Give us a call if not! |

Don’t panic (buy) Mr. Mainwaring!Anyone that hasn’t heard about the impending fuel tanker strike must have been living under a very eco-friendly rock. Petrol stations are closing, queues for fuel are up to a mile long in parts of the UK and the strike hasn’t even begun yet.So what happens once the strike begins and the fuel runs out? How will your business cope? Rather than panic buying, Nottingham based company BlueStar-UK.com Ltd have been making sure that their staff members can work as efficiently as possible from home. “Just because our staff members are not in the office, doesn’t mean they can’t be just as efficient. With the advances of technology we have implemented since being with Pyranet, we can efficiently work from home just like we could from the office”. |

Summer is here, as is the heatServers can often suffer with regular downtime during the summer. This can involve a server either constantly rebooting itself or in some cases, not turning on at all. You may think that something sinister causes these issues but it’s actually something us Brits look forward to each year, the heat.A server is a powerful computer that is put under heavy load dealing with the day to day control of your computer network. Because it works so hard, it needs a constant supply of cool fresh air. Most large companies store their servers in air conditioned rooms but we’re not all that fortunate. Pyranet will carry out a free assessment and make recommendations to make sure you don’t find yourself with an overheating server. Contact us for more details |
