email@example.com Voice Message Attached from 01258895166 – name unavailable

It has been brought to our attention that spam email is currently circulating small and medium sized businesses claiming to be from ‘firstname.lastname@example.org‘. We have noticed that the same email is being sent from a different domain also. The other email address uses your domain and will read similar to ‘Postmaster@example.co.uk‘ where it says ‘example’ , this will be replaced by your domain name. e.g. Postmaster@pyranet.co.uk
An example of the email details can be found below:
Date: Fri 21/07/2017 15:44:35
Subject: Voice Message Attached from 01258895166 – name unavailable
Body content: Click attachment to listen to Voice Message
Please note that the long number in the subject of the email after where it says ‘Voice Message Attached‘ is randomly generated and so if you receive this spam email, then it won’t necessarily have the exact same number in the title.
The bogus ‘voice note’ attachment is a zip file, inside the zip file is a virus which then runs ransomware on your PC, meaning your files (documents, photos, videos, etc) will be encrypted and inaccessible . Do not click on the attachment, you should delete the email straight away.
The people behind this malware have created the email so it appears to come from Gamma Horizon, (with VM standing for voicemail) . As you can see this is taking advantage of a well known and reputable company that people trust in order to try and appear legitimate and unfortunately, this is how so many viruses circulate rapidly and networks become infected.
